TWO GREAT ANNOUNCEMENTS this week so how good is that?
First, Prime Minister Stephen Harper unveiled a $2.5 million pilot project Thursday aimed at monitoring and documenting wait times for childrens' surgeries
The next day, the brain dead minister of public safety, Stockwell Day, announced the federal government is investing $431 million over the next five years to reinforce border safety.
Now let's see - $2.5 million for sick kids - is that about 4 cents per child in Canada? Does that seem just a little excessive? I mean, they don't even KNOW FOR SURE that there are wait times so what the hell is this all about? If it ain't broke, leave it the hell alone - no one's squawkin'.
On the other hand, we have had how many murders at the border over the last 10 years? Well, how about muggings then, and no fair counting muggings of Canadians by Customs goons?
How about robberies? Geeeeze. The worst case was a crazed BC softwood lumberjack who threw his axe at a billboard pix of Dubbya? Well, that axe mighta gone astray - you can't be too careful.
So $431 million seems about right to make sure those borders are kept safe. Only a short sighted moron would put the needs of sick kids ahead of the need to keep safe Canadians schlepping down to Buffalo to shop.
What I like about Steve is he knows how to prioritize. He doesn't let the friggin bleeding hearts interfere with commerce and law and order. The only misstep he's made has been moving Vic Toews outa Justice.
Vic had a great plan for decreasing the prison population so we wouldn't need to invest in new prisons. He was going to have the Police Chiefs of Canada take turns each month drawing the names of 10 prisoners at random. The 10 would each face a firing squad of 10 Mounties who would have 10 shots each. Those who escaped death would go back into the prison population and would be exempt for 6 months of draws.
Toews figured with any luck, the Mounties would get their man at a ratio of 1 to 2, enough to put off any new construction and providing needed target practice for the Mounties into the bargain. Alas, the plan is now on hold.
But a medal for the Government. They doing great things every day.
