Warren Kinsella wrote yesterdat about Saddam Hussein's hanging and how he couldn't tear his eyes away. He also puts forth the fact that people stop to look at accident scenes and that Youtube is proof positive that people are not repelled by violence, but are, rather, attracted to it.
I like Warren. He's astute, literate and a keen observer of human behaviour. I think he is right about what he is saying here. But I have not watched the hanging and, God willing, I never will look at it.
Hussein was evil and the world is a much better place without him. But evil as he was, and as sick and perverted as he was, if I'd been in charge I would not have hung him. Is there a more barberic way for the state (the state, not individuals)... for the state to put someone to death? Well, maybe the Smokey Joe's in the southern states, those godawful electric chairs that don't work properly most of the time and inflict painful, slow death. But apart from them - the answer is no.
If I'd been in charge, I would have had him face a firing squad. Or lethal injection. If the state is going to take a life, it should be in the least violent and most humane way possible.
I think I may be the only person on the planet who did not watch the hanging, does not want to watch it, and wants to hear nothing more about it. The dreadful pictures on page 1 of The Star and The Globe on execution day were bad enough. There is enough violence and tragedy in this world without playing up this kind of an event. Enough already.
