Harpoon - get your boneheaded defense minister on a leash. Pay the funeral costs for Lincoln and Laurie Dinning's son who was killed in Afghanistan. Your cheap penny pinching minister has stiffed grief stricken Canadian parents and left them with thousands of dollars of funeral expenses your "NEW" government promised to cover.
It's bad enough Canadian men and women are dying in a war the country does not want; a war you ratcheted up to curry political favor in Washington. THE LEAST YOU COULD DO, THE ABSOLUTE LEAST, IS PAY FOR THE FUNERALS OF YOUNG CANADIANS WHO HAVE DIED IN YOUR CAUSE.
The Alliance government - it's barf bag time every time these cretins step in front of the microphones and spew more lies and crap all over the place. O'Connor blames the military for not following his orders. Can you believe the audacity of O'Connor's lies? If he ordered the funerals to be paid for they would have been. In fact he hasn't and Harpoon hasn't worried his pretty little blow dried head about it at all.
It's clear why Harpoon is desperate to control the media; he can hide now, but sooner or later he's gotta come to the country. When he finally does, our national nightmare will be over.

They received $6500 the military's normal payment ( as of recently they are getting $6515 more). What I think most people don't understand is that yes the Department of National defense covers a basic funeral and in cases where this basic funeral costs a bit more they will cover over the $6500 ( this is coming directly from my father, 28 year soldier of the armed forces) . This family tallied up a total of $25,000 ( according to an earlier cbc piece) and expect $12,151 to be covered. Yes the government should cover expenses out of the respect of soldiers but at a certain point its the onus of the next of kin to cover extras.
I disagree that the next of kin of soldiers killed in theatre should pick up the costs of a funeral which will be attended by far more than the family. While in some countries deaths of soldiers are "old hat" in Canada each and every one of our troops are to be honoured with Canada in mind.
It is for the Government of Canada which send our youth to war to ensure that those who fall are buried, memorialized and remembered in more than a piece-meal way.
It is the least that the Government of Canada can do. Especially in light of O'Connor's assertions in the HoC that Canada's New Government would be reimbursing the fallen soldier's family the cost of the funeral.
They said it, now stick to it. Support the Troops!
The Dinnings have received over 100,000$ from VA and DND, plus, the 4700 for the cost of the funeral, I'm not sure what more they want? Unless their son named some one else in his will, Mr and Mrs Dinning have already received their sons yearly salary for the next 2 years, plus the 4700 for the funeral, its normally paid 2 to 4 days after a death. I dont have links and I'm going by memory, but I think it was both the Libs and Cons that rewrote DND and VA policy regarding death benefits 3 years ago and this was the set policy. So, if someone has a better idea lets hear it.
The cost to cover funeral expenses should be updated yearly. Why? My parents died approx a year apart. They had the same funeral - casket, notices, etc. My dad's funeral was $2,000 more than my mum's funeral was.
Funeral costs continually go up.
I suggest cancelling some of the photo-op trips the CPC take to Afghanistan and put that money towards the soldiers and families.
I know I don't really want to look at Harper's face any more than I have to.
I'm not sure what not wanting to look at Harpers face has to do with set DND policy, but, whatever.
And, I'm not sure what cancelling trips to Afghanastan has to do with set policy either, but, hey, if a soldiers death gives you a chance to vent then give'er. These policy's anon are set DND policy's...Liberals have had 13 years to change that policy, they didnt because its reasonable policy. Maybe it should be more, but wouldnt that make a better debate rather than grunting and groaning about who you dislike?
It's just not good enough to keep blaming the Liberals for everything. The CPC have had 16 months on this file.
It's time they acted like a responsible and grown up government.
The 13 year crap is tiresome and warn out.
And, as a taxpayer, I'll grunt and groan all I like, just like everyone else.
There comes a time when a government should stop with the Johnnie hit me first and get moving.
Enough already.
The point is:
1. Harpoon said they would pay all the costs of a funeral
2. When the Liberals were in power for 13 years they didn't get the country embroiled in a foreign war. We supported the UN and NATO forces but those were peacekeeping ventures, quite different than a war.
3.The other point is that O'Connor said it would all be covered and he clearly has no clue whether costs are being paid or what day it is. I don't care whether the Dinnings have received a million bucks from the govt - if they are entitled to it they are entitled to it - Harpoon made a promise that he didn't keep - not that there's anything new in that - and that is the point.
