Warren Kinsella is plumping Pinball Clemons for mayor of Toronto.
Holy crap Warren - take an aspirin and lie down and maybe this will pass quickly. Let's hope so.
I am not a big fan of Pinball Clemons. I don't dislike the man - I like his enthusiasm and positive approach to life. He knows football and as a player and as a coach he was full value for his money. He did not stand out above other coaches or many other players but he's a solid pro worthy of our respect.
A leader in the civic arena he is not. We've already seen signs that Pinball should stick to inspirational appearances and leave the leadership to others.
Three years ago Premier McGuinty named Pinball as the head of a Board to hand out program grants to young people to aid in combatting youth violence. Unfortunately, almost nothing has happened. Three years later the money is sitting unused,the programs don't exist, the accountability is missing and the leadership expected from Pinball hasn't emerged.
No surprise really. Running back punts is not a prerequisite for civic leadership. Catching a football doesn't mean you can catch a vision, put together a team and lead the city to new, sunny uplands.
More often than not athletes do not provide inspired leadership out of their natural arena. Jack Kent, the Buffalo Bill's quarterback 100 years ago, was a so-so senator, as was great basketball player Bill Bradley. Red Kelly and Frank Mahovalich didn't score nearly as much in Ottawa as they did on the ice in Toronto.
Yes Toronto needs new leadership but leave Pinball where he is. Why take a successful man and put him in a place where he can only lose? Pinball is ill-equipped to lead city council and the city back from the bog they're mired in. Give your head a shake Warren. We all want better. Let's look for it - but not at the expense of a decent individual.
