This n that

Jennifer Bernier has issued a strong statement in French saying she did not write the email I received yesterday, that she does support Jack Layton and that she is the victim of identity heft. OK. I'll buy that. If I'm Jack, I'm still worried. Some savvy cookie is out there raining on my leadership parade.

So the pistol packin' Vancouver school trustee, Sharon Gregson, who wants every kindergarten kid armed and ready when the baddies swoop down on them, got several letters of support in today's Globe. My first reaction? The NRA is behind the letters. Naw - they aren't that bright. My second thought? Gregson was out in the storm too long last week.

But some of the letters are almost as scary as Gregson's rant. A guy name Michel Trahan sees Gregson as the kind of role model Canadian teenagers need. The Verdun, Quebec letter writer sees Gregson as a successful professional; she's involved in the community; she is a responsible owner of firearms, she's not afraid to be different and she is willing to take a stand for what she believes. OK - but why would I feel so much better if she was taking a strong stand against poverty, or against child violence or for student success. Was she elected to shill for hand gun ownership or to help steer education. I don't know folks - people who get elected to office have got to do a lot better than they have been. Maybe the Vancouver minister should look at the possibility of selective weeding of trustees, like the Halifax minister of education, who simply whacked 'em all yesterday, fired teir asses right out of office until a new election in 2008. If they deserve to get fired because they're argumentative, didn't get along and let politics substitute for common sense, then surely Gregson deserves to be out for the season.

What an absolute tragedy, a mockery of fairness, the incredibly high price paid for ignorance - I'm talking about the 5 Bulgarian nurses and palestinian doctor sentenced to death - again - in Libya yesterday for "deliberating infecting 426 children with HIV."

Anybody else come to the conclusion we ought to pull all Canadians from these moronic countries with their barbaric approach to punishment for phantom offenses, their deadly ignorance, and their racist views which are a cancer in the world? Let's get the hell out and leave them to themselves or, alternatively, bomb them into oblivion. There has to be an end to them and everything they stand for.
Now this kind of crap, which seems to spin a new, dreadful case every single day, really does make me grumpy in toronto.
